web-based immersive experience of civil resistance by Freakygreenfish alias Luca Mußnig
Visitors are invited to enter "FrameTok City Vol. 1" an immersive interactive web-based TikTok world. They can navigate through this digital city and experience an area of social conflict through animated 3D short format content (TikToks). The artist examines the imbalance of power relations between the user and the platform.
This project explores the intriguing transformation of the image of social media from a medium that democratized mass communication into private enterprises with their own agenda. It recalls the digital expression of the "American Dream," where everyone has the chance to go viral or build an audience. Traditionally, public spaces were defined as physical locations for social interaction. However, in the digital era, our perceptions of public spaces have expanded. Social media platforms like Instagram are examples—a virtual space where users can share content, comment, and follow each other. These platforms extend our notion of public spaces but are often influenced by private interests. An illustrative example is the Starbucks union, which used Instagram to connect, organize, and spread their message before the platform intervened by suspending its account. Only after a backlash from the users of the platform did the union get their account back. This highlights the profound transformation of these platforms from their original claim as public spaces.
The project uses the preferences of the younger generation, particularly "Generation Alpha,"(born 2010-2025) which increasingly presents itself as 3D avatars and hides behind pseudonyms. It references emerging avatar-based worlds like the Metaverse and Roblox, while exploring how short-form video content could be consumed in the near future.
The segmentation of short format content into genres is no longer visible for users on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube Shorts. It is just visible for algorithms, which respond to user behavior by recommending content based on their interactions. Informal categories like "BookTok" or "AnimeTok" on TikTok emerge from user-generated naming conventions, therefore the artist created his own genre in which he creates his worlds out of frames and linen called “FrameTok”.
The artworks by "Freakygreenfish" use canvas frames as a metaphor for art and social structures to visualize abstract concepts into tangible realities.
In summary, this artistic concept aims to shed light on the evolution of social media from public spaces to private domains. "FrameTok City Vol. 1" is created to facilitate critical reflections on our ever-changing communication landscape.
